چکیده

” AbshsCt-Seedfings ffOnl three cpen-pctlinsted half-sib white ask seadfofs were clipped in midJuly and their development was compared 10 nonclipped controls after one growing season. I n g e n e r a l w h e n d a t e were analyzed by family clipped seedlings were significantly less desirable in three to six of the eight vartables tested. Numerically, In all families seedlots, the clipped seedlings were Inferior to the controls. Regardless of clipplng treatment, ths growth variable that affected seedling development the most ms the Innate abllll to develop lammas shoots. Seedlings that produced late season lammas shoots also produced the largest numbers for each of the eight variables tested.

THE EFFECTS OF SALT STRESS ON THE SHOOT APICAL MERISTEM AND LEAF GENIERATION IN SUNFLOWER (HELIANTNUS ANNUUS L.)

Sunflower (Helictnthur annuus L. cvs Mehr Shafagh) seedlings were grown in nutrient solutions containing 20.5 to 70.4 mM NaCl and 0 as the control. The effects of salinity on developmental changes occurring in the shoot apices of plants were studied. At 20.5 mM NaCI concentration, the leaf emergence rate and plastochron index of Shafagh increased significantly, but this phenomenon was not o...

Branching responses in Silphium integrifolium (Asteraceae) following mechanical or gall damage to apical meristems and neighbor removal.

Branching in plants increases plant access to light and provides pathways for regrowth following damage or loss of the apical meristem. We conducted two experiments in an eastern Kansas tallgrass prairie to determine how apical meristem loss (by clipping), apical meristem damage (by insect galling), and increased light availability affected growth, reproduction, and branching in Silphium integr...

New Phytologist Herbivore - induced shifts in carbon and nitrogen allocation in red oak seedlings

• A dual-isotope, microcosm experiment was conducted with Quercus rubra (red oak) seedlings to test the hypothesis that foliar herbivory would increase belowground carbon allocation (BCA), carbon (C) rhizodeposition and nitrogen (N) uptake. Plant BCA links soil ecosystems to aboveground processes and can be affected by insect herbivores, though the extent of herbivore influences on BCA is not w...

Carbon partitioning and allocation in northern red oak seedlings and mature trees in response to ozone.

Northern red oak (Quercus rubra L.) seedlings and trees differ in their response to ozone. Previous work reported reductions in net photosynthesis, carboxylation efficiency and quantum yield of mature tree leaves, whereas seedling processes were unaffected by the same ozone exposure. To further characterize differences in ozone response between seedlings and mature trees, we examined carbon par...
